Groundbreaking of Our New Garden!

Aloha all. It's been a long time since the last post, and I apologize for not keeping you updated. Today was the groundbreaking of our new garden! For those of you who don't know, the garden is located behind the Speech and Debate room near the Hawaiian 6 class lo‘i. A shout out to Mr. Hutch, Mama Fuj, Mrs. Ho, Ms. Tully, Mrs. Forster, Kahu Kordell and the two uncles from Physical Plant who helped us make this a reality.
We dug up and tilled the soil (very fertile and full of clay, red dirt, and earthworms), formed two large mounds, and replanted the ‘uala and beans growing in our makeshift hydroponics garden near the "social studies" corridor of Konia. For now, it's just the sweet potatoes and beans, but we are planning to transplant the basil, lettuce, and tomatoes next week. Please feel free to join us!

Sweet Potato ('Uala) Workshop

On Thursday, September 8, the KS Sustainability Crew got together to plant SWEET POTATO cuttings! It's amazing how easy they are to grow— you just plant them and leave 'em alone! Come check them out: they're in Konia 211. If you'd like to plant your own, please feel free to talk to Mr. Hutch, Mama Fuj, Pua, ‘Olana, Nikki or the rest of the crew. We'll be glad to help!

Mana'o From Mr. Hutchison

Last Thursday, Mr. Hutchison shared his mana'o for growing sweet potato (‘uala) more efficiently and using our hydroponic ideas. Here's a short (39 seconds!) video explaining the gist of his ideas on how to grow them.

Welcome!

Aloha and welcome to the KS sustAINAbility team's blog! We plan to get this school year off to a great start by learning more about living sustainably, growing edible plants, and using science to help us understand how hydroponics and aquaponics work (and how we can MAKE IT BETTER!) We'd like to share our mana'o with you... If you are interested in growing with us, please stop by after school on Thursdays in Konia 211. We'd love to have you!

We recycle sports drink bottles and plant tomatoes, Manoa lettuce, and basil.

Recycled centrifuge tubes— they're great for growing seedlings in!
Pua demonstrates how to prepare the centrifuge tubes for planting: by adding holes, water can pass through and roots have more room!
